Shelby R Jaquez

About Me
Shelby Jaquez (b. February 12, 1999, Passaic, New Jersey) is a self-taught visual artist raised in the culturally vibrant city of Paterson. As a first-generation Dominican-American, Jaquez draws deeply from his roots and working-class upbringing to create cinematic, emotionally resonant works that explore themes of romance, nostalgia, and the dark feminine aesthetic.
Primarily working with oil paint, he also incorporates pastels and charcoal, blending traditional techniques with contemporary moods. Since beginning his practice in 2018, Jaquez has been inspired by film and music, weaving visual narratives that feel both intimate and evocative—like frames captured from an unfolding story.
Beyond the studio, Jaquez is the founder of a community-driven art exhibition platform in NYC and NJ, dedicated to showcasing and supporting emerging artists. His mission is not only to share his own stories through brushstrokes but also to amplify the voices and visions of others.

Artist Statement
One of my biggest inspirations is music. Music has awakened something inside me. Musicians like Jimi Hendrix inspired me to strive to be the best I can be. What keeps me going is the constant obstacle I overcome in each painting. Each painting is like climbing a mountain, there are many ways to approach it, and each option is difficult. You keep pushing through and eventually, you get to the top of the mountain and feel that rush of satisfaction.
